Advent Series Sermons

There are many references to the Birth of Jesus Christ in the Bible.

During this Advent Season, Dr. Charles Montgomery, will preach upon the theme: "Celebrating The Birth of Christ" and look at our Saviors birth as told in Matthew, Luke, and Revelation.

Come to our 5pm services and join in the celebration !

" "From the Pastor" with a penAdvent, like its cousin Lent, is a season for prayer and reformation of our hearts. Since it comes at winter time, fire is a fitting sign to help us celebrate Advent…If Christ is to come more fully into our lives this Christmas, if God is to become really incarnate for us, then fire will have to be present in our prayer. Our worship and devotion will have to stoke the kind of fire in our souls that can truly change our hearts. Ours is a great responsibility not to waste this Advent time."

Edward Hays, A Pilgrim’s Almanac

Dear Friends,

Advent is upon us. Advent is the four weeks of preparation before we celebrate the birth of Jesus. For many people this is the Christmas season and the emphasis is often on the external - the shopping, feasting, partying, and decorating. For the Christian, this season is a time of waiting and doing what we can to prepare ourselves for something new this year - allowing God to be born in us again. Here are some suggestions for your Advent season:

1. Develop for these 4 weeks a different daily discipline of paying attention to God. We have a devotional available to you that might be helpful.. It contains reflections on the symbols of this season. Other forms of attention to God can include fasting for a day or a day of silence. All of this is our way of opening ourselves to God’s presence and allowing God into our lives.

2. Participate in the season of giving - but not in exchange with others. Instead find a way to be involved in "secret service" and give a gift or money to someone or an organization.

3. Practice the gift of presence - your presence with another person. There is someone in your life who is in need of connection and would welcome your visit or your invita tion. Pray to God about who that might be.

4. Find an advent prayer partner. For some people this is a very difficult season. Commit yourself to daily prayer for them and plan a weekly prayer time with them.

5. Worship God with music. Spend time every day listening to the sounds of the season: whether it is Handel’s Messiah, traditional carols or contemporary Christmas music. God can reach our souls in a different way through the beauty and the majesty of music.

We prepare to celebrate the greatest gift the world has ever known. May these weeks be a time that we do not waste - but use wisely - in order to grow in our faith.

See you in Worship,

                                    Margot

"Emergency Food Shelf"Thank you to all who donated food toward the Emergency Bags. We were able to complete ten full bags.

~ Bonnie Sharp

In addition to providing Emergency Food Bags as needed to our community, we help with smaller, portable food for the homeless. You may have recently read the article that mentioned KRCC with regard to the Forest Park area homeless woman, Kaye Wheat. I am happy to report to you that because people were able to reach her through KRCC, she is no longer homeless! In addition, she has been showered with friendship from old classmates and co-workers, financial gifts, a new haircut and clothing, and several job offers. She has begun work and is so grateful to all those who have assisted her in times past and who have helped her get back on her feet.

If you have not yet made a financial commitment to support our ministries for 2012, there is a pledge card in your mailbox in the narthex.

ADVENT DEVOTIONAL

This is a season in which we prepare spiritually for the coming of Jesus into the world. Members of our church provided reflections on the meaning of Chrismons.   A Year of Appreciation Film Night

Tuesday, January 31st at 7:00pm

Join us to watch the PBS Documentary "Flag Wars"

Shot over a four-year period, Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras’ Flag Wars is a poignant and very personal look at a community in Columbus, Ohio, undergoing gentrification. What happens when gay white homebuyers move into a working-class black neighborhood? As the new residents restore the beautiful but run-down homes, black homeowners must fight to hold onto their community and heritage. The inevitable clashes expose prejudice and self-interest on both sides, as well as the common dream to have a home to call your own. Winner of the Jury Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival, Flag Wars is a candid, unvarnished portrait of privilege, poverty and local politics taking place across America. This will be followed by a discussion about changing neighborhoods.
